A glimpse into the dysfunction of Mexico's patchwork of public and private health care, Luke Lorentzen's Midnight Family follows a family of EMTs through Mexico City as they struggle to make a living keeping other citizens alive. Though its micro view limits its usefulness in big discussions of public policy — it's easy to imagine American partisans using it as evidence both for and against government-run health care — it is a vivid reminder that all such policies are lived out by millions of individuals, who die every day when things aren't well run. Opening titles explain that in Mexico City, the government runs 45 public ambulances to serve a sprawled-out population of 9 million. That's nearly the entirety of what Lorentzen tells us directly in the film. Everything else we observe or infer during ride-alongs with the Ochoa family, who drive one of an unstated number of private ambulances that fill gaping holes in the city's delivery of health care. This observational approach gives the film its flavor, especially when it comes to family dynamics, but it makes things frustrating for viewers hoping to actually learn something. Lacking outside comment, we can guess but never be sure when the Ochoas are doing the right thing and when they're pushing an ethical line, maybe fatally. (Press notes make some things more explicit, but moviegoers don't get press notes. Whenever they pick up a patient who needs care they can't provide, for instance, they have choices to make: Go to a government-run hospital or a private one? Go to the closest facility or a further one that might be more affordable or better equipped? Leave the crowded-looking free hospital in favor of another down the road? At many junctures, the EMTs inform patients and/or their loved ones of the choices, speaking gently but usually presenting one option as smarter than others. They clearly have more experience than their customers with how the system works. But is their advice sometimes clouded by self-interest? After they've brought patients to a private facility in one scene, we see a staffer there hand over cash to the driver. Is this a shady kickback or part of a somehow legitimate transaction? The former seems likely, but we have no way of knowing for sure. We do, however, get a good sense that the role of police in this ecosystem is morally tainted. Ambulance drivers pay cops bribes in return for tips about accidents; cops hassle drivers, enforcing rules that seem to change arbitrarily. Questions of law and ethics aside, viewers get a visceral understanding here of the cutthroat nature of this private-ambulance business. Though they suffer through long bouts of boredom, the Ochoas leap into action when they hear reports of an accident: We race through the streets with them, often neck-and-neck with other vans trying to make it to the scene first. Whoever's riding shotgun mans the PA, shouting at drivers of other cars to heed the sirens and get out of the way. Juan Ochoa quickly becomes the film's star. Barely 17, he's far more professional than the older man we assume is his father. While slow-moving Dad tries to bum cash off his employee-children — he appears to have emptied his pockets for cops — perfectly groomed Juan hustles. He drives the ambulance, helps patients and reports on the night's frustrations in phone calls to his unseen girlfriend. He also does much of the undesirable job of asking for payment. Though Lorentzen mostly averts his camera's gaze when patients are around, he does listen in on some of the conversations about cost. A high-school girl who's been head-butted by her boyfriend weeps while she bleeds in the back of the van, meekly asking, Is this expensive. And shortly after, Can you please give me a hug to calm me down. Later on, another woman balks at the 3, 800 pesos the Ochoas charge for emergency transport (one of many items on their price list, that's roughly 200 U. S. When patients refuse to pay, that's that; as far as we can see, the EMTs have no recourse. Each night, the Ochoas race through the neon-drenched streets of one of the worlds most densely populated cities, using a scanner to monitor police reports as they gun hard to reach accident victims — and other prospective clients — before another service gets there. Luke Lorentzen was 23 and new to Mexico City, where he was frustrated trying to assemble a different project. One day in December 2015 he came upon the Ochoas ambulance, parked in front of his apartment. They invited him to ride along. “That first evening I just saw this whole underworld of for-profit health care that really shocked me, ” Lorentzen said, “and made me feel a lot of different things, all while enjoying the experience of being with this family. ” The film, which won a special jury award for cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival and the grand jury award at Englands Sheffield Doc/Fest, immerses audiences in that experience, putting them behind the wheel of the Ochoas cramped emergency vehicle. The compact space heightens the visceral situations the family encounters — as they collect bloodied and emotionally distraught patients — and the sometimes eccentric dynamics among its members. Lorentzen, who rode with and filmed the Ochoas until early 2018, found the excitement (and existential moodiness) of the nightly runs could be captured with minimal tools. He worked as a one-man crew, with one camera strapped to the ambulances hood and another in his hands. The filmmaker built confidence over a long series of rides, working limitations — a single 24mm lens, the tight space inside the vehicle — to his advantage. The nocturnal shoots also provide a glimpse of an urban wonderland most people dont see. “I was so excited about just how beautiful and alluring Mexico City is at night, ” he said. “Theres so many different neon colors. ” Lorentzen said he was as likely to think of the visual compositions of the late Austrian documentarian Michael Glawogger (“Whores Glory, ” “Workingmans Death”) as David Fincher while behind the camera, working almost entirely with available light. He also looked to the obsessive experiential quality of documentaries out of Harvards Sensory Ethnography Lab, with their knack for giving moving images a tactile expressiveness. That approach gives the films craziest sequences a rollercoaster immediacy. One high-speed run, in which Juan hit the pedal to brake ahead of a rival ambulance, bristles like an excerpt from “The Fast and the Furious. ” Lorentzen was too wrapped up in such moments to worry much about the risks. “I was so motivated to capture all this energy, ” he said. “There were very few moments where I felt really out of control. Speeding at 80 mph through Mexico City is pretty hair-raising, but I knew those would be some of the most amazing scenes in the film. ” Such elements were much easier to convey than the often disturbing ethical questions that came into play. “The deeper I got into it, the more I realized there were these really big socio-political questions at the center of it, ” said Lorentzen, whose Mexican residencies were juggled with four seasons working on Netflixs “Last Chance U. ” “Some nights, they save somebodys life and other nights they put people in really questionable situations, ” said the filmmaker, who shows how the family must hustle the suffering, or sometimes prioritize money over mercy, to generate the income that keeps their cash-strapped enterprise in business. When they made the first “Ip Man, ” with the incredible Sammo Hung handling fight choreography, it became an instant sensation. The film treated Ip Man as a humble folk hero who liberated the people of his province by teaching them to defend themselves with Wing Chun-style kung fu from greedy bosses and the invading Japanese army in the lead up to the Second World War. The great Yuen Woo-Ping steps in to replace Sammo Hung after “ Ip Man 2 ” and his work here is typically jaw-dropping; as beautiful as it is nerve-wracking. Yuen Woo-Ping also directed this years similarly rich “ Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, ” following Zhang Jin s character from “Ip Man 3, ” and is planning a sequel as we speak, a small comfort to fans of these films winning aesthetics and gorgeous choreography. Yen, the Fred Astaire of kung fu, is finally beginning to look somewhat his age, which adds poignancy to his performance and adds no little extra tension to his fight scenes; can he still defeat his opponents as handily as he used to? His scene with Adkins, especially, is a nail-biter. Adkins isnt usually framed by other directors to emphasize his relative enormity as so much of his screen persona revolves around him being underestimated by his opponents. Here hes a tank, swift and sledgehammer-hard, and you genuinely worry about Yens body standing up to Adkins legwork and formidable fists. Its one of the few times in the four “Ip Man” movies that it feels like the filmmakers arent stacking the decks in their heros favor. To go with the films musical dramatic structure, Yip and Johnny Tos regular cinematographer Siu-Keung Cheng create a world alive with brilliant color and ornate design. This feels at times like a Stanley Donen or Li Han-hsiang movie, with precise framing of weightless bodies in wonderfully lit presentational spaces. Yips maturation from his early Category 3 days to one of the most dependable directors of martial arts has been most rewarding because hes realized that being a more serious director doesnt mean losing vibrancy. The first two “Ip Man” movies had sombre, reserved color palettes, grey and brown to match the depressive mood of pre-and-post-war China. In “The Finale” Yens signature black clothing cant help but stand out against the neon set design. Yip seems like hes having as much fun with every single production element here, as opposed to just saving his energy for the death-defying combat sequences. Kenji Kawai's music is still too emphatic for its own good, but when the dancings this good, the tune hardly matters. The “Ip Man” movies have always been nationalistic triumphs, with Yen as the savior of the downtrodden, protecting China from the tyrannical Japanese in the first film, and then from Americans, and from the avaricious character they brought to China in the latest two. “Finale” leans hard into the series anti-racist message, turning Adkins sadistic sergeant into a mouthpiece for Trump-era bigotry (Adkins is the best actor among the villains; the sadistic cheerleader and her family seem to be reading their lines phonetically. Slowly the enmity the other masters feel toward Ip Man dissolves because theres greater threat to their way of life than Lee. Its a clumsily delivered but deeply felt message of cooperation in trying times and surely theres no bad time for such a thing. Through four movies now Yens beatific kung fu master has taken punches for every kind of person, helping others by staying his best self in a violent world and only resorting to violence when its absolutely necessary. While leaving the school after a meeting with the principal, he chances upon the daughter of Wan, Yonah being bullied by a rival cheerleader, Becky. Ip saves her and escorts her home, with Becky accidentally cutting herself with a pair of scissors. Wan accuses Ip of using his daughter to get the letter, and challenges him to a fight for it. The fight is disrupted by an earthquake, and Wan tells Ip they will finish their fight at the upcoming Mid Autumn Festival. Ip refuses, explaining that he merely escorted his daughter home for her safety, and leaves. Becky complains to her parents that she had been bullied. Her father Walters, who is an officer of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, is pressured into holding the Association responsible and deporting all Chinese associated with them. Meanwhile, Hartman, a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marines, attempts to convince Barton Geddes, the Gunnery Sergeant, to incorporate Chinese martial arts into their hand-to-hand combat training. Geddes proves that the Marines' current Karate training is superior by asking him to fight the Marines' Karate instructor, Colin Frater, who defeats Hartman. Hartman later manages to convince the Commanding Officer about doing so, and is instructed to film the Mid Autumn Festival happening at the Association for research, which upsets Geddes. Geddes asks Frater to challenge the Grandmasters at the Festival, defeating a few of them until Ip interferes and defeats him. Meanwhile Wan, who was supposed to be present at the festival, is arrested by the immigration officers. Upon seeing Frater defeated, Geddes barges into the Association to find out where Wan is kept, and defeats everyone there. He then threatens Walters to release Wan into the Marines' custody before bringing Wan into the camp to fight him. Due to a tip-off by a student of Lee, the Association is left empty by the time the immigration officers raid the place. Lee provides refuge for the Association, earning their respect. Wan is seriously injured from the fight with Geddes. Ip, filled with emotions, finally reveals to his son that he has cancer, which finally allows him to talk to his father over the phone after many attempts by Ip. Ip is brought into the Marines' camp by Hartman, and defeats Geddes in a fight. Wan has already prepared the letter for Ip, but the latter said that he does not intend to move to San Francisco as he does not like the place. Ip reconciles with his son. CHAPTER TWO Eventually, the small party reached a cavernous space in the corridor that opened out into a huge rocky archway that stretched almost fifteen metres high and over twenty wide. Bone-like boulders braced the base of the archway that rose from the stones, and where they crossed in a point at the ceiling, a sigil that Avis would not have been able to reach across with both arms outstretched depicted the outline of a golden star in reverse on a black circular background. There wasnt a mortal or celestial realm anywhere that didnt at least recognise the formation of those five simple lines and fear it on some level. Although Avis couldnt see it in his present condition, he knew it was there staring down at him as disdainfully as everyone else that marched under that House Banner. On the other side of that archway, he could hear the raised voices of other males and attempted to close his eyes. Their anger could be felt almost through the walls, and he was under no delusion what the subject of their debate was about. “Wait here, ” Clarise commanded of the servants. She then took Avis broken jaw and lightly brushed her lips against his battered cheek. “I will return in a moment, ” she whispered. The voices fell silent moments after Clarise went inside. The wait for Avis was agonising. He had no idea what she was saying to them, and had no way to defend himself or assist her in any way. He was completely at her mercy. There was nothing else he could do. If she failed, he would return to The Eternally Damned. If she succeeded … no, he didnt want to give himself hope. This was not the place for it. If anything, this was the last place for it. The sign at the First Levels gate said as much. When footsteps re-emerged from inside the opening Avis whimpered again. They werent just from that of his wife, but also the heavy clopping of a second, larger pair of broad hooves. No sound was uttered, but the servants released Avis sharply and dropped to their knees with their foreheads pressed to the compact surface and their elongated arms stretched out in worship before them. Without their support, Avis collapsed to the ground beside them. Small noises escaped Avis throat as he raised his arms to shield himself from the one who had escorted his wife from the High Court Chambers. Only one would draw such a response from Clarises servants by his mere presence alone. Avis stuck to his training and looked at the compacted flooring around his shattered nose. Dont look, he thought to himself. For Mystals sake, dont even think about looking. The demons footsteps ended with a final clop on either side of Avis head. Avis felt his bowels tighten, and for once was grateful hed been given nothing to eat or drink for so long that he couldnt humiliate himself further. “Leave us, ” Lord Belial commanded, his echoing rumble reverberating off the walls to fill the room. The room was immediately vacated. Lord Belial then took a step back and Avis could hear him squatting down with his elbows resting on his knees. “I warned you, did I not? ” he rumbled to the prone form before him. “There are whole realms out there that fear my wrath, yet you alone believed you had the power to defy me and bring harm to those I hold dear. ” Unlike his sons, Lord Belials voice never rose above the same ominous monotone the entire time he spoke. And within that monotone, lay an eternity of control, and an innate ability to draw out even more terror from those that listened to it. “You will never be welcome here. Those like you will never be welcome here. Those like you will suffer as you have suffered if they dare challenge this decree. My daughter wishes to uphold her matrimonial vows to you, but I assure you, if you ever, ever cause her to shed so much as one tear again, you will spend the rest of eternity amidst the Damned and I will crush every member of your pantheon into oblivion just for sharing your bloodline. Do I make myself quite clear? ” Avis answer was to whimper again. Yes, it was. Very clear. Very, very clear. Despite the celestial ability to live regardless of consequence so long as one had a power base of mortal worshippers, Avis held no doubt at that moment that Belial knew of a means to fulfil his threat. Somehow, someway, Mystal would die if he … Avis paused. … if he mistreated Clarise again? “If I speak to you again, fear the repercussions. ” Lord Belial said. Avis then felt the gush of Lord Belials great wings as the supreme demon launched himself into the air, but still, the demons last words prior to his emphatic threat echoed over and over again in Avis tortured mind. If … If … Could Clarise really want him back? Was that what this was really all about? Was he really getting a second chance here? A way to escape the Eternally Damned? Was this really true hope? As these questions rambled into others, his whimpering shifted from agony and suppression to one of confusion. What if hed gotten it wrong? What if hed made a mistake? What if this entire charade was nothing more than another torment to show him what he wanted to see, only to turn against him at the first point he relaxed? With that humbling thought, his mind resumed the numbed clarity it had before. If it was just another one of their games, the Lords of Chaos had only to tell him where to go and what to do and he would comply, just as he had been taught to. Clarise returned a few minutes later. He could tell it was Clarise, for she still bore the Mystallian form that he found so pleasing and the delicate click of her fine heels on the compacted floor gave her away. But she wasnt alone. He heard the faint rasp of plate armour. Thick, heavily fortified, plate armour that rubbed against itself without ever wearing, or even buffing the plates. These were no servants. These had a reputation of their own amongst the Known Realms. Avis closed his eyes, barely flinching as a large, crab-like pincer tightened around his right upper arm while a set of long talons hooked his left and lifted him to his feet. He didnt even have to look at them to know what they were. Highborn Hellion Guard: the elite of all the Pantheon Guards. As fanatically loyal as they were deadly, they were celestially bred to be the ultimate combat operative. The golden plates of their armour glowed iridescently, even in the darkness. They possessed four upper limbs—each capable of a completely different, independent attack from the others, so that no matter what persuasion of enemy they faced, one of those arms was capable of incapacitating—and in most cases, eliminating them entirely. Beneath the sturdy torso were three powerful legs, designed to support the body as it manoeuvred itself in four different directions simultaneously. Drawn over and above their shoulder-lines were two long, broadly curved bat-like wings with a large pointed claw protruding over the top to give them the advantage in aerial attacks. All this was just their standard mode. As beings capable of militaristic shapeshifting, they could become any weapon of any size they needed to be and moved faster than most could see to vanquish an enemy. The only time Belial had ever unleashed them upon a singular pantheon in the past, that pantheons army broke ranks at the sight of these creatures coming for them and fled from the battle before the Hellion Brute Squad had made their first offensive move. “Forgive me, my love, ” Clarise said. “I know how you feel about my true form, but to leave The Well and journey up into Hells punishment levels, I need to fly. ” She looked into his unfocused gaze a moment longer before shedding her Mystallian appearance in favour of that with demonic wings. “I will only maintain this form until we arrive at The Walk. Please do not be angry. ” Angry? That was almost humorous—if only Avis had the strength to laugh. With his eyes closed, he felt a gush of air and his feet leave the ground. Although he knew where they were heading, Avis breath escaped him with a gasp a few moments later as they left the Highborn Well and the sudden icy winds from Ninth Level blasted his fire-blistered skin. The eternal frozen wasteland of Ninth Level was where the worst offenders were sentenced to endure the frozen lakes without the luxury of falling asleep. Statues of frozen souls littered the terrain. Even without his sight, Avis knew they were there—because he had been one of them not so long ago, sharing in the misery that came from being one of the Damned. Icicles coated all their eyes as they stared out at the hopelessness of their situation and their mouths were wide with screams that no one would hear. Others were frozen inside the lakes, and more hung from the ceilings as giant frozen stalactites. They flew through the gates of Antenora that separated the Eighth and Ninth Levels and up the Malebolge Mountain towards the Seventh Level. They passed over the chasm that was filled almost to the brim with souls suffering from leprous diseases. The stench that wafted up to them as they flew overhead would have once made Avis nauseous, had he not spent time down there, dwelling in that putrid stench. Oh, they had humbled him well. His only conscious act while down there was to fight his way past the mortal souls to reside on the top layer of that decomposing group. But even that became too much effort and after a while others were dumped on top of him, smothering him with the horrific reality of their predicament. Their party flew towards the second chasm from Antenora, sardonically nick-named by all who knew it as The Walk. Despite what Clarise had in mind, this place was never really designed to heal. Healing would have been a pleasurable thing, and that went against everything the Nine Levels of Hell were designed to do. From overhead, Avis resigned himself to his fate and opened his eyes, looking down at the circular chasm that was carved into this sublevel. Its twenty-kilometre length didnt appear that long at all from where they hovered and the souls that were packed into the one-kilometre-wide chasm moving in an eternal circle were indistinguishable. At one point of the circuit, sat Sarvalis. Even from this distance, recognition of his bulk was undeniable. Standing at over two kilometres high from toe-talon to horn tip, his twisted horns rose nearly six head-lengths from his exposed skull. His arms were as thick as houses and the great sword he clenched in one hand dripped excessively with the blood of those that walked below him. That was the punishment of this level. To be severely mutilated by Sarvalis upon arrival. Be it a loss of a limb, beheading, or even simply gutted …it didnt really matter as the agony was universal. Then, while nursing the injury, the soul was made to move as others from behind jostled them forward, inch at a time. With every inch of ground covered, the wound would begin to heal, even though the extent of the injury made it near impossible to move without moaning in agony. Then, upon completion of the circuit, the soul would have made a full recovery and was forced to face Sarvalis and his accursed sword all over again. Round and round this dance went. Round and round and round. Avis was different from the regular Damned that dwelled here. He never knew if Sarvalis sword was going to strike him down as he walked. Sometimes it would, other times it wouldnt. If the Highborn wanted him to suffer elsewhere, he was made to walk only so that he could heal sufficiently to be moved elsewhere. If they wanted him to suffer here, they allowed Sarvalis to do his handiwork, as creatively as he could imagine. Avis was never told which it was going to be. “Milady, ” Sarvalis purred roughly, kneeling on one knee with his great head bowed as Clarise and her party descended upon the ridge that overlooked The Walk. “What an … unexpected surprise …” True to her promise, Clarises form shifted into that which her husband found more pleasing as soon as her talons came in contact with the rocky ledge, despite how out of place a well-dressed Mystallian lady of nobility appeared in these less than ideal surroundings. Sarvalis repugnant grimace at her choice of shape was completely irrelevant. “Lord Avis is in need of healing. It is my wish that he completes The Walk and returns with me to the Well in relative health. ” “Milady, ” the demon replied, still on one knee. “Be strong, my love, ” Clarise whispered with a kiss, then stepped away and gestured for the guards to place Avis at Sarvalis feet. As was customary to her upbringing, she fought to maintain her dignity—to keep her eyes free of tears and appear dispassionate to all that was happening around her. The Damned and other nameless slae-els like them were never to know there were emotional differences within the sects and ranks of the Hellions. Before her, Avis and the Hellion Guard stood in the middle of the flow of souls like a rock amidst a stream. The Damned mingled and moved past him, indifferent to everything but their own, freshly incurred injuries. Clarise interlocked her fingers and held them down before her, forcing herself to remain calm as her fathers guards released their hold on Avis and stepped back, pushing the Damned aside without remorse. Do this, Avis, she willed. It is but one walk … But instead of moving, Avis legs collapsed beneath him and he was stepped upon by those hapless souls further back in the line that trudged forever onwards with their injuries. Clarise lost her composure with a gasp of fear as he went beneath the hordes of moaning Damned. “Avis! ” she cried, and ignoring protocol, she stepped forward and slid down the chasm into that same sea of lost souls that separated them. Some of those outer souls, overcome by madness from the duration of their stay, saw Clarise as the pinnacle of what they would never achieve and found the strength to reach for her with their gnarled fingers. The Highborn Hellion Guard responded to this by abandoning Avis completely and launching themselves to her side to protect her. They formed an impenetrable barrier around her, pointing the arm that appeared like a coral stump towards the attacking souls injuries, injecting them with millions of poisonous spores. Their screams did little to ebb the tide of them, and before long, all four fighting fronts were being used on either side of Clarise. But Clarise never returned to her Hellion form—never chose to fly to the safety of the ridge above her. Instead, her eyes were locked on the spot where her husband was last seen. The Highborn Hellion Guard said nothing as they easily fought off her attackers and waited for Clarise to decide what it was she wanted to do next. If it was her desire to be there—it was not their place to speak to her about the dangers involved in it. Theirs was simply to safeguard her during her decisions, whatever they may be. Repercussions of such spontaneous actions were the responsibility of others far higher than they. But Clarise was not interested in staying safely at the edge of the sea. Her husband was at the bottom of that sea somewhere, and she intended to find him. Pushing her way from the wall, Clarise barely gave the Hellion Guards enough time to position themselves to act as a barricade between the Damned and herself. She pushed her way forward to where she had last seen Avis. Sarvalis snarled and held his mighty sword high and to the left. “Garlee! ” he called throwing himself into the air and sliding into the horde of souls that mingled along the path. He swung his sword through them, cleaving his way towards Clarise. A small, goblinoid demon appeared from nowhere to hover near the great demons head. “Get some of the Malebranche devils from Eighth Sub-Level up here— now! ” Seeing their only opportunity to elude punishment even for a single circuit, the souls yet to be punished surged forward—only to rebound off the brute squad guard. Clarise made her way ever so slowly through the sea of souls. Sarvalis swung his huge blade hard and fast, carving and cleaving his way towards her. The tallest of the Damned only reached his knee, and many fell victim to the crushing weight of his feet as he crossed the chasm in his haste to reach Clarise. “Milady! ” he called. “Where is Avis? ” she called back. Sarvalis wanted to say something. He dearly wanted to, but he knew better than to say what was so clearly written on his face as he turned back towards his side of the ridge. Avis did not deserve this. Even he—a non-Highborn Hellion, had been outraged by Avis heavy-handedness of one of their Highborn Ladies, and he would never understand the High Courts decision to allow Lady Clarise to rescue him. Clarise followed the path made in Sarvalis wake, refusing to look down upon those that had been trampled into the ground. Her only concern now was … “Avis! ” she called, only just managing to reign in her initial impulse to rush to his side. Many of Avis bones had been crushed beneath the weight of those that trampled him and his eyes refused to open. But his chest on one side continued to rise and fall ever so slightly and the blood in his veins continued to move. “Avis, ” she said, kneeling down beside him in the filth. She took his head in her hands and tilted it towards her. “You must move, beloved. However much it pains you, you must move. Please. I will be here with you every step, but you must move. ” Avis looked up at her, and for a moment, his line of sight sharpened and she knew he was looking at her. But it only lasted a moment, and then it was gone. “Avis! ” Clarise cried, as the sharp jabbering of dozens of small Malebranche devils was heard on the ridge above. They slid down the embankment into the Damned, using their pronged forks to push and force the Damned back into place. With the Malebranche devils there to maintain control, Sarvalis could focus his attention on his Highborn visitor. “Milady, your efforts will be for naught if you proceed in this manner, ” he said, opening his free hand to plead with her, without physically making contact. Clarise looked up at him. “What do you mean? ” “You have given him hope, Milady, and he has accepted that hope with open arms. He knows he does not have to do anything anymore, because you will protect him, and so long as he believes that, he will not move from that spot. ” “Clarise, ” a voice called, from far above. Not ‘Milady or ‘Lady Clarise or even a tone that implied reverence. Simply ‘Clarise. Clarise looked up and saw a winged celestial angling his descent upon the heat currents towards her. Unlike the demons around her, this ones wings were feathered and coloured the same bright orange and flame-red as that of his shoulder-length hair. His skin was as pale as her husbands and his eyes were a deep rich blue. Most of his body was covered by polished silver armour with a simplified outline of a dove engraved upon the chest plate. In his right hand, he carried a flaming sword that was poised across his body to his left, ready to strike. He swung his sword in a downward stroke as he landed alongside Clarise, striking the nearest soul to her across the shoulder and sending it screaming back into the void of others. He didnt face Clarise at first, but turned his attention to any other souls, foolish enough to test his mettle. His wings shifted with agitation. The moment she recognised him, Clarise curtseyed low with her head bowed and held her new position. “Clarise, stand up, ” he said, finally. “Uriel …” “Stand up! ” the Archangel commanded, this time with more force. Clarise did as she was told. “I have the authority of the High Court to do this, Uriel. ” “You do not have the authority to disrupt two sub-levels of Hell, sister, ” he corrected. Clarise lowered her head again and fell silent. That had never been her intention. Uriel placed the pointer finger of his free hand under her chin and lifted her eyes to his. “I will not say what has been said so many times already, ” he said, gently. “Whatever your reasons, you have chosen to stand by Avis, and your determination to see him through this is commendable. But you know this is not the way to achieve your objective. You cannot give him support during this time. YES. MAAM. Les MisÃrables: The Staged. There are some shows which the cast cant seem to get enough of, and Les Misérables is one of them. Several previous cast members are currently back on stage in the production for One Day More (and then another sixteen weeks after that) when the show temporarily moves to the Gielgud Theatre. A slightly different production to the one previously at The Sondheim Theatre (formerly Queens Theatre) this limited run will be a fully-staged concert version, with over 65 musicians playing in the accompanying orchestra. So, who are these returning stars in their multitudes? And whats their history with Les Misérables? Carrie Hope Fletcher One of the lovely ladies returning to Les Misérables is Carrie Hope Fletcher. Les Misérables was Carries West End debut, as she played the adorable role of Young Eponine at the sweet age of nine in 2001. Fast forward twelve years, and Carrie went on to play this same role once again, but this time she was all grown up, and so was Eponine. Carrie is currently the only British actor to have performed both young and older Eponine in Les Misérables. Shes also performed the role in the musicals 30th Anniversary gala performance, and globally in Dubai. In fact, Carrie is the longest-running Eponine in the London productions 30-year history, performing in 959 shows! Michael Ball Not only did Michael Ball also make his West End debut in Les Misérables back in 1985, but he also originated the role of Marius Pontmercy in the show. Performing in the Les Misérables world premiere, Michael is an original cast member of this incredibly iconic show. As well as performing at the Barbican for the shows first-ever performance, Michael also took to the stage at the Palace Theatre during the West End transfer. Michael has also performed on three Les Misérables cast albums as Marius, including the Original London Cast album, the Complete Symphonic Recording and the 10th Anniversary concert edition. Now 34 years later, after making an incredibly big impact in the original production (apparently it was quite a hectic scene at the stage door. Michael is back, but this time hes also taking up a new character, on the other side of the revolution, playing Javert. Alfie Boe Returning to reprise his previous role of Jean Valjean, Alfie Boe appeared in Les Misérables in 2011, the same year that Matt Lucas joined the show. But before treading the West End boards as prisoner 24601, Alfie had previously performed the role in the concert edition for the 25th-anniversary celebrations. He was then cast full-time in 2011 in the full production. Alfie has also been chased by Javert in the Broadway revival in 2015, taking over from Ramin Karimloo. As well as having a long history with Les Misérables, Alfie is also connected to Michael Ball, who is playing his arch-rival in this new production. Alfie and Michael have toured together, recorded three albums together, released three singles as a pair and sang together many times on stage too. Basically, this show is a bit of a reunion for Alfie and Michael! Matt Lucas If anyone encompasses the song, I Dreamed A Dream, its Matt Lucas. A huge musical fan during his childhood, Matt dreamed of being on that famous revolving stage since the moment he first saw it at the age of 13. And his dream came true, when he was asked to perform the role of Thénardier, the wicked innkeeper, at the Les Misérables 25 th anniversary celebration. The only cast member whod never appeared in a stage production of the show, Matts journey was documented by the BBC. And he clearly impressed the audience and the producers, as he went onto perform the same role the following year for three months. Just like Michael, Matt has also dueted with Alfie Boe on one of his many albums. Rob Houchen One of Carries co-stars during her last run in Les Mis was Rob Houchen. And just like Carrie, hes back, reprising his role of Marius for the staged concert. As well as holding up the barricades of the Queens Theatre, Rob has also performed in the show on a global scale, taking part in the Les Miserables 30th Anniversary show in Japan. Bradley Jaden A very recent performer in the show, Bradley was playing the lead role of Javert when the final curtain came down on the previous production only a few weeks ago. And now hes already back, this time playing Enjolras. No stranger to that particular character, before his time on the West End barricades, Bradley had played the role of Enjolras in the 30th Anniversary production. Katy Secombe Also reprising her previous role in the new production, Katy Secombe will play Madame Thenardier. Katy has performed in the iconic musical both on stage and on screen, as she landed the part of Madame Huchloup in the 2012 Academy award-winning film adaptation of the show. Katy Secombe has played the role of Madame Thénardier for three productions of the show, including the 30th Anniversary Cast production. John Owen-Jones For three performances a week, the role of Jean Valjean will be played by John Owen-Jones. Just like his fellow cast members, John has also performed in Les Misérables many times before. He first played Jean Valjean at just 26 years old, making him the youngest person to ever play this difficult role. John had previously understudied Jean Valjean, and had also performed the roles of the Factory Foreman, Feuilly, Grantaire and Enjolras before taking over the role full-time. He even performed within the choir of the 10th Anniversary Concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1995. John returned to play Jean in 2005 for two years (with a few months off to be in another show…busy bee. As well as playing Jean Valjean for London audiences, John has taken the role over the pond, performing in American productions. The last time John performed in Les Misérables was in 2009, as part of the 25th Anniversary International tour. Welcome back John! Adam Bayjou Playing the role of Montparnasse in this production, Adam has previously performed as the Factory Foreman, as well as being the first cover  Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. As well as a strong resume filled with both West End and Broadway shows, Adam also performs around the world in several groups, including VOXX – The West End Tenors, The 12 Tenors and The Opera Boys. And thats not even all the cast whove previously been in other productions of Les Misérables. Heres a full list of the other performers in the show who arent stepping onto the barricades for the first time: Rosanna Bates (Factory Worker) made her professional debut as Fantine. Ciaran Bowling (Swing) has also been a Les Mis swing. Simon Bowman (Bishop of Digne) has played  Marius and Jean Valjean in the West End and performed in the Les Misérables Concert. Oliver Brenin (Swing / Dance Captain) has also been a Swing / Dance Captain in the show. Earl Carpenter (Bamatabois) has performed as Javert in the Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Production. Hes also co-produced five symphonic presentations of Les Misérables in Concert. Vinny Coyle (Feuilly) has previously been a Swing, a Cover Grantaire and a Factory Foreman. Samantha Dorsey (Whore) has previously played Cosette. Tamsin Dowsett (Locket Crone) has played  Crone/Cover Madame Thenardier Nicola Espallardo (Factory Worker) appeared in the ensemble in the West End. Celia Graham (Factory Girl) has played Cosette and performed in the 25th Anniversary concert. Barnaby Hughes (Courfeyrac) has performed the role of Combeferre in the West End. Holly-Anne Hull (Whore) has been in the ensemble and as cover Cosette in both the international tour and in the West End. Oliver Jackson (Claquesous) has appeared in the West End production. Christopher Jacobsen (Warnings) has appeared as Enjolras and Alternate Jean Valjean, and was 1st Cover Jean Valjean in the 25th Anniversary international tour. Gavin James (Factory Foreman) has performed over 1000 times in the West End production as the Bishop of Digne/ Combeferre, has sung the concert in various locations and at the Olivier Awards, performed in the 25th birthday celebrations and provided vocals for the film. Ciaran Joyce (Joly) has performed many roles in the show, including cover Marius and cover Grantaire in the international tour, Gavroche and Montparnasse in the West End. Katie Kerr (Madame) was in the recent production. Sarah Lark (Assistant Dance Captain / Swing) is reprising her role from the recent West End production. Joanna Loxton (Assistant Dance Captain / Swing) is reprising her role, and has also been on the UK tour and taken part in the 25th-anniversary concert. Craig Mather (Combeferre) has performed in the West End production. Stephen Matthews (Babet) has performed in the Palace production, in the film adaptation and at the 10th-anniversary concert. James Nicholson (Jean Prouvaire) performed in the latest production. Rosa OReilly (Whore) has been understudy Eponine in both the international tour and Barbican production, took part in the 25th-anniversary concert and appeared in the film. Claire Parrish  (Swing) has been in the West End in the ensemble. Sophie Reeves (Whore) was first cover Fantine in 2016. Leo Roberts (Brujon) has performed as Javert and The Bishop of Digne in the West End. Raymond Walsh (Grantaire) has been in the West End production. Gemma Wardle (Factory Worker) played Eponine in the West End at just 17 years old. She also performed at both the 10th and 25th-anniversary concerts,  and even played Eponine at a private performance for the Queen. Andrew York (Lesgles) is reprising his role from the latest West End production. Possibly our favourite story is about Grainne Renihan who in this concert plays Hair Crone. Her time playing Fantine made her the longest holder of that role in the shows West End history. She is returning to the show alongside her son Ciarán Bowling, who she was pregnant with whilst playing Fantine in the 1996 cast, AND her sister Lizzy was in the show with her in the early 90s.
